education vs. incarceration
It’s interesting to note that the modern prison system was designed to help rehabilitate, not punish. Sure, there are some violent offenders, say, who can’t — or refuse to — be helped, and locking them up is just to keep them and others safe. But just punishing is destructive not only to the individual, but also society: it turns prisons into schools of crime, hardens criminals. A bit of kindness goes a long way; education is the greatest gift that can be given an individual.
